Dubai air cargo is the 11th busiest in the world.Dubai is a splendid city and is located in the Persian Gulf area. Geographically it lies at the crossroads between Europe, Africa and Asia and as it is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, a lot of people from other countries come to see and do business in Dubai.
Tourists come here to learn about its people, places and cuisines. You can meet lots of tourists in Dubai throughout the year. Moreover the introduction of low cost airlines and business class air travel has led to an increase in Dubai air cargo. To increase tourist and dubai cargo intake/handling capability a new international airport called Dubai World Central International Airport is coming up in Jebel Ali free zone. This airport is projected to become the fourth largest airport in the world in terms of size.
It is expected that this new airport would be ready for take offs by the year 2017. As per projections this international airport would handle almost 70 million passengers and the number of flights coming into Dubai everyday would also substantially increase. Presently Dubai is handling limited flights from North America but airlines like Emirates and few others are trying to increase the number of flights to Dubai by introducing new flight options.
Nevertheless regular flights to Dubai are a near possibility and with the new airport coming up you can expect to witness increased activity in Dubai air cargo.
Even at present the airport is handling a lot of Dubai air cargo since most of the flights of Emirates airlines land here. There is a spacious duty free shopping centre within the airport complex which is very popular with tourists. The airport is known for its excellent service and beautiful architecture and has won many awards because of this. In the year 2006 a third air terminal was added to the airport that would double its capacity to help handle increasing air traffic and Dubai air cargo. This terminal caters exclusively to Emirates airlines and is capable of handling advanced aircrafts like the Airbus A380.
Another airport has been set up in the free trade area of Jebel Ali. Termed as Jebel Ali Airport City, the project was launched in 2004 but it was only in January 2005 that construction work could begin. Initially this airport was conceptualized as a cargo airport but now it is expected that this airport would be capable to handle almost 40 million passengers every year.
The airport in Dubai houses many duty-free stores within the campus and is considered as a duty free shopping haven. Here you can purchase goods produced in different countries at a much cheaper rate. This airport was set up in 1959 by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and it became operational in 1960 with 9 airlines operating from this airport which were mostly DC-3 planes. Presently this airport can accommodate all types of jets.
The setting up of the cargo village at Dubai has provided added strength to the already growing Dubai logistics industry in the realm of handling Dubai air cargo.

Dubai Cargo Village which is considered as the airfreight hub of the region, has achieved many successes in cargo transshipments. The growth of this center has been phenomenal over the past 15 years. Most of the credit goes to its staff and other workers. Their contribution and effort has indeed streamlined the movement of cargo in the region.
In its nascent stage it had the capability to handle 150,000 tonnes of cargo. However within a few years as dubai air cargo demand increased the need was felt for its expansion.

The superbly planned mega cargo terminal has different levels with each level having a designated function. This new cargo terminal is further augmented by state-of-the-art equipment. The mega cargo terminal construction is going on in full swing and will be completed in four stages.
The Dubai Cargo Village which is handling million tonnes of cargo annually is growing at a steady growth of 15 per cent per annum. With the coming up of the new mega Dubai cargo terminal this growth is expected to go up even further up. Since 2007 the mega cargo terminal is opening up in different phases. The last phase of this project is expected to be completed by 2018. Almost $200 million is being spent to build this last phase of the terminal and once completed it will be capable to handle 2.7 million tonnes of cargo a year.
There is another new cargo facility that has come up in Dubai known as Dubai Logistics City. This new facility became operational in 2008. The emergence of Jebel Ali as the logistical centre of the UAE had led to a situation where it had to handle a sizeable amount of cargo. There are almost 80 companies in the Jebel Ali complex and more are lining up to take space. With the establishment of the new facility at the complex, Jebel Ali will now be able to handle about 12 million tonnes of Dubai cargo.
The Dubai Cargo Village is bringing in lots of trade and as such is contributing significantly to economy of the emirate. It is because of this promising cargo center that today Dubai is on the world map. There are additional projects on the anvil which will further strengthen this center to handle more cargo. One big advantage of this cargo center is its location which is just next to the airport and this is very convenient for Dubai cargo transportation.
It is interesting to note that this Cargo Village has the capability to turn around a loaded aircraft in 90 minutes. It can also manage and complete sea-air cargo handling in just four hours.
